The Coronavirus and Your Wedding - 7 Things to Consider
The Coronavirus (COVID-19), has certainly caused a lot of disruption all over the world in recent weeks and for couples whose wedding day is near it can definitely add a new level to pre-wedding stress. While we should all be taking precautions and use good ole’ common sense (WASH YOUR HANDS) when it comes to these types of threats, the Coronavirus does not have to be the end to your perfect wedding day. Below, I have compiled a few thoughts and ideas as this virus relates to the wedding day.
1. Consider an Outside Venue for your Wedding Ceremony
With spring right around the corner and all the natural beauty that comes along with it an outdoor setting for your wedding ceremony could offer a perfect reprieve from an indoor venue while giving your anxiety some relief. Fresh air, sunlight, and space for everyone to spread out are all benefits as it pertains to the Coronavirus plus most outdoor wedding venues give you some of the best ceremony pictures.
2. Offer Hand washing – Handsanitzer Stations for your Guests
The experts have all told us; one of the most important methods of preventing the spread of this virus is washing your hands. It baffles me that hand washing seems to be such a new concept to so many but the benefits of this simple task go a long way. Talk with your venue about how they can position hand sanitizing stations throughout and make them prominent.
3. Forgo a Receiving Line
While the receiving line is a tradition that we have seen on a decline in recent years some couples especially in certain religious circles and communities still regularly observe this. During this time of a heightened sense of personal space forgoing a receiving line is most recommended.
4. Plated Meal Reception
Consider a plated meal for your wedding reception with table service in lieu of buffet. If your plans were set on a buffet for your reception talk with your venue or caterer about alternate serving options. Plated meals, prepackaged hors d'oeuvres and individual portions all offer their benefits. There are also many other ways that can make this a fun and unique experience so get creative.
5. Think about Elderly Family Members and Guests
With most health professionals agreeing the Coronavirus is most severe for those in their 60s and above a couple should be considerate of older family members (i.e. grandparents) and guests. The decision for these individuals to attend or take part in your wedding day needs to be an unpressured decision for them to make after considering any underlying health conditions/concerns and possibly consulting their healthcare provider.
6. Live Stream Your Wedding Ceremony
Consider offering alternative options and ways for guests to take part in your wedding day. With the number of cases growing travel is becoming a major concern for many. As you approach your wedding day keep in mind that some of your guests may opt not to travel, but do not let this get you down. Many of my destination couples already live stream or record their wedding ceremony as it is not too often that everyone is able to make it on the wedding day. So for those unable or unwilling to be physically present offering an alternate way for them to view and take part in your ceremony may be something you should consider. For live streaming think Facebook Live, FaceTime, Skype or Hangouts. There are also a few paid platforms that offer private invitation/only streaming. Your videographer may be able to assist with so be sure to consult with them on available options or ideas they may have.
7. Take Care of You
Most of all take care of YOU! In the days leading up to the big day, it can get pretty stressful. Remember that if you aren’t well no matter how beautiful your wedding day is it will not be as enjoyable. This time of year remembering the basic essentials of consistently washing your hands, using hand sanitizer, using a barrier such as a tissue to touch many common public things, staying hydrated and keeping your hands away from you face are all personal care items to remember. Also, try incorporating some Vitamin C or elderberry syrup to build up your immune system.
Whatever you do, do not let the Coronavirus ruin your wedding day. As with most everything in life, this too shall pass, and hopefully, society will learn something from this, if merely the elementary rule of - Washing Your Hands!
However, if all of this Coronavirus talk has you stressed out and at your wits end thinking about it and the pressure of planning a large wedding perhaps a simple beach wedding is a better fit for you. Imagine warm breezes, your toes in the sand and the gentle waves lapping near your feet as you exchange vows and celebrate your love hand in hand here on the beautiful Grand Strand. If that sounds like a better plan, give me a call and let’s plan your simple beach wedding!
